Genevieve A. Spidle

Genevieve “Toots” A. Spidle, 79, of Sumner, died Tuesday, September 5, 2017, at Community Memorial Hospital in Sumner.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner is assisting Genevieve’s family.

Genevieve Anne, daughter of James and Viola (Troyan) Hooper was born October 1, 1937, in Iron Mountain, Michigan. She was baptized and confirmed in the Episcopalian Faith. Genevieve received her education in the Iron Mountain Schools, graduating from Iron Mountain High School in 1956. Following graduation she attended Humboldt Aviation School in Minneapolis. In 1959, Genevieve starting working in Chicago for Capital Airlines. It was while working at Capital Airlines that she met Theodore "Ted" Spidle. The couple was united in marriage on February 14, 1959, in Chicago and to this union four children were born, Jeffrey, Terry, Karen, and Steven. In 1961, the family moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Genevieve worked in accounting and held several positions for companies in Cedar Rapids. In the summer of 1983, they moved to Burlington, Vermont and lived there until moving to Madison, Wisconsin in 1988. The couple retired to Iron Mountain, Michigan, in 1994. Ted passed away on July 9, 2000. Genevieve remained in Iron Mountain until moving to Sumner in June of 2016, to be closer to family. She volunteered at the Caring House in Iron Mountain and at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. Genevieve was an avid reader, puzzle solver, and enjoyed needle work.

Genevieve is survived by her four children, Jeffrey Alan Spidle of Geneva, Illinois, Terry Lee (Valerie Plunkett) Spidle of Springfield, Missouri, Karen (Wil) Manweiler of Sumner; and Steven Douglas (Melanie) Spidle of Cedar Rapids; eight grandchildren, Stuart Bowers, Heath Spidle, Ryan Spidle, David Heaverlo, Kristen Heaverlo, Megan Manweiler, Connor Spidle, and Emily Manweiler; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Clairene “Babe” (Ronald) Gustafson of Iron Mountain, Michigan.

In addition to her parents, and husband, Theodore, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Jarrod Bowers on October 25, 2000; and two sisters, Viola “Butch” Goodsell and Janet “Dahly” Famiani.
